Aliens Cause Global Warming

Thanks to Sarah for this link. It's a good speech and so true. Last Saturday I was working with my nephew/godchild on our Christmas present for his parents project. Somehow we got to talking about "Global Warming". He's 13 and has been brain washed like most into believing the 'bowing at the altar of environmentalism' crowd regarding global warming. I told him that yes I did believe in global warming but only in the sense that it was a naturally occurring phenomenon just like the ice ages which occurred over thousands and thousands of years. He looked at me like I had been smokin' crack or something. Then we got on the cigarette smoking issue and I also told him that while I didn't think smoking was good for you and didn't like the smell I didn't believe in the second hand smoke theory. Told him it was what was called 'junk science'. He gave me another look like I was an 'alien'. By the time he I took him home I think he thought, oh...that Auntie Toni is just such a radical! Hopefully, when he's a bit older and his critical thinking is more mature he will think...hmmm, maybe Aunt Toni was right.

Anyway, look at what Crichton says....

I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had.

and

Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus. There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus. Period.

Hmmm....doesn't some of this sound just like the Neosocialists (oops, I mean 'Progressives') of our time! Crichton has examples of junk science thru the ages proven incorrect.
